MMMM #20: The Fourth Key to Mobile Hardware Modernization Success

In our fourth video about the 5 keys to mobile hardware modernization success, you'll learn the importance of prioritizing enhancements. (The first three keys were replacing existing functionality first, including analytics from day one, and encouraging an innovation mindset.)

Video transcript:

So, we're back in the 5 keys to success for hardware modernization in the mobile enterprise. The fourth key is to prioritize the enhancements. We've talked about collecting data from the analytics and the insights that we can glean from how the users are using the application. We've also talked about creating an innovative mindset where we're capturing a lot of new ideas about how the application should evolve over time.

That brings us to the next challenge now, which is ‘we can't do everything for everyone, right now.’ What we have to do is we have to create a mechanism and a process through which we collect all of these innovative ideas and we looks for a way to prioritize what should get our investment dollars throughout the remainder of the life cycle. The goal there is to pick those capabilities of the application that bring the highest measurable business value for the lowest cost to actually implement that capability.

It's often said that 80% of the value of software comes from 20% of the features. The challenge is, how do you figure out which are the right 20% that you should be focusing your energy on? What a lot of people will do is put that into a spreadsheet, list out all the user stories, list out all the functional capabilities that we're looking to build into the application, and come to some process where you derive what the return on investment would be for that particular capability. Then, also, what it's going to cost to actually build that capability into the system. It's a little bit clumsy in a spreadsheet, but it certainly can be done.

Another option is to visit a solution that we've built, called Vector3. Vector3 actually helps you go through that prioritization process with a web-based portal. I'll put a link in the notes today, so that you can see the solution, and you can also check out a webinar of actually how the solution works. Whether you use Vector3, or whether you do it with a spreadsheet, the point remains the same. You have to prioritize the enhancements so that you can maximize the return on your investment of this new solution over time. Having a mechanism to do that is the way that you can ensure that.

So, the number four key to success in hardware modernization is to prioritize the enhancements throughout the life cycle of the application.
