Use the Lesson Step Heatmap Viewer
The Heatmap Viewer turns a step's error percentage into a picture, showing exactly where Learners tapped on the screen. You can filter the tap data by time (30, 60, 90 days, or a custom range), see the expected correct control for context, and read the per-step instructional text, so you can tell not just that Learners missed, but where and why.
What is the Heatmap Viewer?
The Heatmap Viewer shows where Learners are tapping on a specific step screen. It takes the percentage from the Lessons Dashboard and turns it into a visual picture, so you can see not just that Learners made mistakes, but where and why.
How do you open it?
From the Lessons Dashboard, select any colored step cell in the grid. The Heatmap Viewer opens in a new tab and shows the screen Replica for that step.

What will you see?
The Lesson name and step name appear at the top, with the screen Replica in the center, the actual screen a Learner saw during that step.
On the left, the Step Description panel shows the per-step instructional text: the instruction the Learner was given for that step. Reading it alongside the screen helps you judge whether the instruction was clear enough to guide Learners to the right place.
What is the expected correct control?
The Heatmap Viewer shows the expected correct control for context: the button, icon, or element the Learner was supposed to tap on that step. Seeing the expected correct control next to where Learners actually tapped makes it easy to tell whether they found the right target or went somewhere else. What does the green outline mean?
A green outline appears around the expected correct control, the button, icon, or element the Learner was supposed to tap. Any tap inside the outline is a correct action; any tap outside it is an incorrect action and is counted in the Lessons Dashboard error data.
What do the dots mean?
Dots show where Learners actually tapped. Each dot represents one or more recorded taps. Dots inside the green outline are correct taps; dots outside it show where Learners tapped instead. A cluster in the wrong area tells you something: Learners may be tapping a similar-looking element nearby, or misreading the instruction.
How do you filter the data?

Filtering by time is useful for seeing whether a content update changed behavior: compare dot patterns before and after a revision using a 30, 60, or 90 day window or a custom range.
How do you use this data?
Read the per-step instructional text in the Step Description to understand what Learners were asked to do, then look at where the dots fall relative to the expected correct control and its green outline. If most dots are inside, Learners are finding the control. If they cluster in the wrong area, consider whether the instruction is clear, whether another element is drawing attention, or whether the correct control is easy enough to find. Use what you see to decide whether the content, the instruction, or the screen design needs updating.
How do you close it?
Select Close at the bottom left to return to the previous view.
