Reading the Step-by-Step Grid

The step-by-step grid is the main part of the Lessons Dashboard, and this article shows Content Developers, Program Administrators, and Learning Leaders how to read it to spot the Lessons and steps that need attention.

What does the grid show?

Every Lesson in your program appears as a row, with columns that break down Learner performance at each step. Once you know how to read it, you can quickly spot which Lessons and steps need attention.

What’s in the Lesson Name column?

Each row starts with the Lesson name, with its module shown below. Select the three-dot menu on any row for two quick actions: Edit opens the Lesson in the Lesson Builder, and Preview shows the Lesson as a Learner would see it.

What do Total Incorrect and Total Attempts mean?

Column	What it shows
Total Incorrect	The total number of incorrect actions recorded across all steps in the Lesson.
Total Attempts	The total number of times Learners have attempted the Lesson.

Use the two together to gauge activity and error volume. A Lesson with high Total Incorrect and high Total Attempts may simply have a large Learner population, so the step-level data is what tells you whether there’s a real content problem.

How do you read the step columns?

Each step gets its own column, starting with Step 1. Columns show a percentage or a count of incorrect actions, depending on your View As setting.

A colored cell means tap data was recorded at that step; the color shows how serious the error rate is. Select any colored cell to open the Heatmap Viewer and see exactly where Learners tapped.
0 Actions means no incorrect taps were recorded—common on steps that don’t require a tap, like informational or video steps.
“--” means the step doesn’t exist in this Lesson. Lessons have different numbers of steps, so not every column applies to every row.

How do you sort the grid?

Select any column header to sort by that column—useful for ranking Lessons by Total Incorrect, Total Attempts, or the error rate at a specific step. Select the header again to reverse the order.

How do you use this data?

Start with Total Incorrect to find the Lessons with the most errors, then scan the step columns to see which steps drive them. Red cells with high percentages are your highest priority; select one to open the Heatmap Viewer. If a Lesson is mostly green with one or two red steps, the issue is likely isolated to those steps; if most steps are red, the Lesson may need a broader review.

What if it doesn’t work as expected?

Contact your Local Administrator first. If your Local Administrator cannot resolve the issue, submit a case through the Skyllful support portal.
