Modify Lesson Steps

Steps are added, given controls, duplicated, archived, and reordered in Lesson Builder, and this article shows Content Developers and Instructional Designers how to do each of those and how to leave a step out of a mode it does not belong in.

 How do you add a step?

1 In Lesson Builder, click the circular [+] at the position where you want the new step. There is one between every pair of steps and one after the last step.
2 Add the screen. Click Screen Library to choose an existing Replica, or Upload Screen to bring in a new one.
3 Enter the step Name. The field arrives pre-filled with the Lesson title, so replace it with something that describes this step. It is required.
4 Add the control the Learner will act on, or leave no-action-required in place if the step is only something to read.
5 Click Update.

 

Note: The Comments, Link, and Approve icons on a new step stay disabled until the step is saved. 

 

Note: A new step arrives with a Screen Placeholder rather than a screen, and with the Lesson title already sitting in Name. Both are there to be replaced.

How do you add controls to a step?

A control is the thing on the Replica the Learner taps. A text entry field is the thing they type into. Skyllful counts the two separately, and that distinction matters here: a step takes one control, plus as many text entry fields as the task needs.

A new step arrives with no-action-required sitting in Selected Controls. That is a real value, not a placeholder to be cleaned up. Leave it on any step where the Learner reads the prompt and taps to continue.

1 On the step's General tab, clear no-action-required from Selected Controls using the [X].
2 Click the control directly on the screen. This is the way to do it, because you can see exactly what you are picking.
3 If the control is awkward to click, or you would rather work by name, open the Add Control list instead and choose it there. The Filter box narrows a long list.
4 Either way, the control lands in the Add Control field. Click the [+] beside it to move it into Selected Controls.
5 Click Update.

 

Note: If the list reads "No available additional controls with current selection," the step already has its one control. Clear it with the [X] if you want to pick a different one.

 

Note: no-action-required appears in the Add Control list alongside the Replica's own controls, so you can put it back if you clear it by mistake. Clearing a control leaves Selected Controls reading "No controls selected," and the step is not valid in that state.

 

Note: Controls have to exist on the Replica before they can be added to a step. Adding a control here does not create it. Buttons and text entry fields are drawn in Replica Maker. See Add Buttons to a Replica and Add a Text Entry Field to a Replica.

How many controls can a step have?

One. A step takes a single control, and once it has one the Add Control list stops offering others. If you want a different control, clear the one that is there first.

Text entry fields are not counted against that limit. A step can carry as many as the task needs, and the order you add them in is the order the Learner works through them in Walkthrough mode, so add them in the sequence you want them filled in.

 

Note: The field is labelled Selected Controls, plural, and the [+] beside the Add Control list looks like an invitation to keep adding. Neither is a sign that a step will take more than one control.

How do you duplicate a step?

Lesson Builder copies a step for you, so there is no need to go back to the Screen Library and rebuild it.

1 On the step you want to copy, click Actions.
2 Choose Duplicate Step to copy the step and point the copy at the same screen. Choose Duplicate Step and Screen to copy the step and make it a copy of the screen as well.
3 Click Update.

 

Note: The difference matters. Duplicate Step leaves both steps sharing one screen, so an edit to that screen shows up on both. Duplicate Step and Screen gives the copy its own screen, which is what you want when the two steps need to look different from each other.

How do you delete a step?

1 On the step you want to remove, click Actions.
2 Choose Archive.
3 Click Update.

 

Note: Archiving removes the step from the Lesson. It does not delete the Replica, which stays in the Screen Library for other Lessons to use.

How do you reorder steps?

1 To move a step one position, use the up and down sort arrows in the step rail.
2 To move it further, open the screen tray using the narrow control at the far left of the screen, then drag the screen up or down into the position you want.
3 Click Update.

 

Note: The screen tray is easy to miss. It is a collapsible panel down the left edge of Lesson Builder, opened by a narrow control that sits flush against the side of the window. Open it and you get every screen in the Lesson in step order, each with its type badge, which makes it the fastest way to see the shape of a long Lesson as well as to reorder it.

How do you leave a step out of a mode?

Not every step belongs in every mode. A step that sets the scene may be worth keeping in Talkthrough and Walkthrough but not in Knowledge Check.

1 On the step, open the tab for the mode you want to leave it out of.
2 Clear the Include in lesson mode checkbox on that tab.
3 Click Update.

The tab then shows a crossed-out eye, so you can tell at a glance which modes a step has been left out of without opening each tab.

To include or exclude every step at once, open the Lesson's ... menu, then Step Actions, then Include All Steps or Exclude All Steps.

 

Note: Excluding a step is not the same as customizing one. A step takes its content from the General tab in every mode, so you only open a mode tab to write something different for that mode. Deselecting the checkbox there removes the step from that mode altogether.

What if you cannot modify a step?

The control you want is not in the Add Control list It does not exist on the Replica yet. It has to be drawn in Replica Maker first.
