Local Data Masking Overview
Sanitize screenshots locally before they reach the server.
The Data Review Tool lets you sanitize screenshots locally before they’re uploaded to Skyllful, and this overview explains what it is, why it matters, the settings that control it, and how screenshots enter the review workflow, for Content Developers and Instructional Designers.
What is the Data Review Tool?
It lets you safely sanitize screenshots before they’re uploaded to Skyllful. Using browser-based Optical Character Recognition (OCR), it detects text on each screenshot and lets you edit, mask, format, or bulk-replace sensitive information. Because all review and redaction happen locally in the browser, sensitive information is never sent to the server until it has been fully approved.
Why does it matter?
Previously, creating Lessons with Replica Maker required uploading screenshots to Skyllful’s servers, even when they held sensitive information—so customers with strict security requirements couldn’t use it. The Data Review Tool keeps screenshots local until they’re reviewed and approved, combining OCR, extraction, find/replace, CSV configs, and human review into one controlled workflow.
| Benefit | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Compliance protection | Meets requirements for HIPAA, GDPR, FERPA, and other frameworks by preventing unredacted PII from leaving your environment. |
| Removes adoption barriers | Organizations that couldn’t use Replica Maker due to security policies can now create training content confidently. |
| Designer empowerment | Redact directly in Skyllful Studio—no external tools. Review happens in browser memory; nothing uploads until you click Upload for each screen. |
Which settings control masking?
The tool is activated by three independent toggles in Learning Program Settings, so you can mix and match your preferred level of data control.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Force Data Review on all screenshots | Requires all screenshots (including screen captures converted to images) to go through review before uploading. |
| Allow users to upload source videos to Video Library | When off, videos captured in Replica Video Capture stay local and the Video Library tab is disabled. |
| Upload videos dropped into Replica Video Capture to Server | Controls whether videos added to Replica Video Capture auto-upload. When off, they stay local until reviewed or processed. |
How do screenshots enter the review workflow?
Screenshots flagged for review can enter the workflow in several ways:
- Drag-and-drop into Screen Library
- Dropping videos or screens into Replica Video Capture
- Uploading screens into Lesson Builder (drag into a step or use the action-bar upload button)
When Data Review is enabled, screenshots are immediately labeled “Data review required,” and a review banner prompts you to open the tool.
What should you keep in mind?
- Refreshing the browser discards all unreviewed work.
- Uploads must be reviewed individually.
- Screenshots are only routed to the masking workflow if they’re uploaded after Data Review is turned on in the Learning Program.
