Customize Walkthrough Mode
Walkthrough guides Learners through a workflow with an on-screen prompt at each step while they perform the actions themselves, and this article shows Content Developers and Instructional Designers how the prompt comes from the step description, what little needs changing on the Walkthrough tab, and how to set an example value for text entry in Skyllful Studio.
What is Walkthrough mode for?
Walkthrough guides the Learner through the workflow one step at a time. The control is highlighted, a dialog explains what to do, and the Learner performs the action.
It sits between Talkthrough, where the Learner only watches, and Practice, where support drops away. Walkthrough is the first mode in which the Learner touches the screen.
How is Walkthrough different from Talkthrough?
Talkthrough guides the Learner with spoken narration and captions, and the actions play automatically. Walkthrough guides the Learner with on-screen prompts in a dialog, and the Learner performs the action. Both support the Learner through the workflow, and Talkthrough gives more support.
What is built on the General tab, and what is built on the Walkthrough tab?
The foundation of every mode is built on the step's General tab. That is where the step's name, description, and the control the Learner acts on are set. Every mode starts from them.
Walkthrough works straight from that foundation, so a Lesson has a working Walkthrough as soon as its steps are built. In practice you are writing the Walkthrough while you work on the General tab, because the step description is the prompt Learners read.
Expect to change very little on the Walkthrough tab. Most steps need only:
- Include in lesson mode, to confirm the step plays in Walkthrough.
- Example Value, for a text entry.
- Dialog Position, when the dialog covers something the Learner needs.
- The mode's own description and background image, in Walkthrough Lesson Mode Settings.
If the foundation is wrong, such as the wrong control on the step, fix it on the General tab.
How do you customize Walkthrough mode?
Step |
Action |
|---|---|
| 1 | Open the Lesson in Lesson Builder. |
| 2 | In the View Steps row, choose Walkthrough. The Walkthrough Lesson Mode Settings panel opens, and every step switches to its Walkthrough tab. |
| 3 | Complete the Walkthrough Lesson Mode Settings for the whole mode. Include the background image Learners see in Skyllful Simulator, and a description written for Walkthrough, such as "In this Walkthrough, you will check and accept your schedule." |
| 4 | On each step's Walkthrough tab, confirm Include in lesson mode. Add an Example Value for any text entry, and change the prompt or its position only where a step needs it. |
| 5 | Select Update to save your changes. |
Note: Update stays unavailable until you change something, and your work is saved only when you select it. Leaving Lesson Builder without selecting Update discards your changes.
What is in Walkthrough Lesson Mode Settings?
These settings apply to Walkthrough across the whole Lesson.
Setting |
What it does |
|---|---|
| Estimated time | The time in seconds you expect a Learner to need for Walkthrough. It feeds progress tracking in Skyllful IQ and is required before you can publish. |
| Skills Covered | The skills this mode builds. |
| Background image | The image Learners see behind Walkthrough in Skyllful Simulator. Choose or upload an image, or select Generate Thumbnail to create one. Images cannot exceed 5 MB. |
| Mode Name Override | Renames Walkthrough for Learners. |
| Title Override | Replaces the title Learners see for Walkthrough. |
| Description Override | The description Learners see for Walkthrough. Write it for this mode rather than reusing the Lesson description. |
What can you set on a step?
Select the caret beside a panel to expand it.
Setting |
What it does |
|---|---|
| Include in lesson mode | Whether the step plays in Walkthrough. |
| Action | Whether the Learner has to do anything. Choose No Action Required Of User for a step the Learner only watches, or User Must Do The Following to have the Learner act on a control. |
| Action Type | The kind of action, such as Tap/Click. This is shown for reference and comes from the control on the General tab. |
| Example Value | For a text entry, the example text Walkthrough shows the Learner. |
| Description | The prompt the Learner reads. |
| Dialog Position | Where the prompt appears on the screen. |
Note: A step has one control. A screen can also have a text entry, which is not a control and appears alongside it. A control shows Action Type, then the prompt fields. A text entry shows Example Value instead.
How do you word the Walkthrough prompt?
Write it on the step's General tab, in the step Description. That text is what Learners read in Walkthrough, so word it with the Walkthrough prompt in mind while you build the step.
The Walkthrough tab has its own Description field, which replaces that wording for this mode only. Leave it empty unless Walkthrough genuinely needs to say something different. What you type there does not change the General tab, and it does not change what Talkthrough or Practice say.
What do you set for a text entry?
Walkthrough shows the entry rather than asking the Learner to work it out. Enter that text in Example Value.
Practice and Knowledge Check hold their own expected text, on their own tabs. The values do not have to match the Example Value here. Using different text in each mode gives the Learner variation instead of the same entry three times.
Where can the dialog appear?
Dialog Position places the prompt on the screen. The choices are Auto, Top, Top Right, Top Left, Bottom, Bottom Right, Bottom Left, Left, Left Bottom, Left Top, Right, Right Bottom, and Right Top.
Auto lets Skyllful place the dialog for you. Choose a position yourself when the dialog would cover the control the Learner needs, or when you want the prompt in a consistent place across several steps.
How do you change the way the dialog looks?
The dialog's appearance is not set on the Walkthrough tab. It comes from the prompt styling on the step's General tab, which controls the spotlight on the highlighted control, the dialog background, and the button colors. The same styling is used by every mode that shows a prompt.
For how to set those styles and copy them between steps, see Style Screen Prompts.
How do you know a step is included?
Each step carries a tab for every mode. A tab with a crossed out eye means that step is excluded from that mode, so it will not play for Learners.
To include a step in Walkthrough, open its Walkthrough tab and select Include in lesson mode.
How do you preview your work?
Select Toggle Preview on the step to see that one step as the Learner sees it. Select Preview in the bottom bar to run the whole mode.
Check that the dialog does not cover the control the Learner has to use, that the prompt says what you expect, and that the styling matches the rest of the Lesson.
What if Walkthrough mode does not work as expected?
Symptom |
What to do |
|---|---|
| A step does not appear in Walkthrough | The step is excluded. Its Walkthrough tab shows a crossed out eye. Open that tab and select Include in lesson mode. |
| You cannot publish the Lesson | The estimated time in Walkthrough Lesson Mode Settings is required before you can publish. Enter a value in seconds. |
| The prompt shows the step description when you wanted different wording | Enter the wording you want in the Description on the Walkthrough tab. An empty Description uses the step's description from the General tab. |
| Walkthrough shows nothing in a text entry field | Expand the text entry and enter an Example Value. Practice and Knowledge Check take their expected text from their own tabs. |
| The dialog covers the control the Learner needs | Change Dialog Position from Auto to a position that leaves the control clear. |
| The dialog colors look wrong | Dialog styling comes from the step's General tab, not the Walkthrough tab. See Style Screen Prompts. |
| The step has no control for the Learner to act on | Controls are set on the step's General tab, under Selected Controls. Fix it there, then return to the Walkthrough tab. |
| Your changes disappear | Changes are saved only when you select Update. |
