How Complete and Readiness Are Calculated

Skyllful IQ reports two headline percentages on every lens, Complete and Readiness, and they answer different questions, so this article works through how each is calculated and what it means when the two disagree.

 Why do Complete and Readiness disagree?

Both percentages sit side by side on every Skyllful IQ lens, and they rarely match. An Assignment can read 50% Complete and 58% Readiness on exactly the same data.

Neither is wrong and neither is the more accurate of the two. They count different things. Complete counts whole Lessons finished. Readiness counts work done at the lesson-mode level. Once you know which is which, the gap between them stops being confusing and starts being useful, because it tells you where the work is sitting.

How is Complete calculated?

Complete is the share of assigned Lessons that have been finished in full.

Note: A Lesson counts toward Complete only when all of its assigned modes are finished. A Learner who has worked through the Video, the Walkthrough and the Practice but not the Knowledge Check has finished nothing as far as Complete is concerned.


How is Readiness calculated?

Readiness splits the work into two halves and weights them equally: learning events on one side, Knowledge Checks on the other. Each half is scored on its own, then averaged.

Worked example. 100 Learners are each assigned one Lesson made up of four modes: three learning modes and one Knowledge Check.

Note: Because the two halves are weighted equally, Knowledge Checks carry as much of the Readiness figure as all the learning modes combined. An Assignment where Learners work through the content but skip the Knowledge Checks will show a Readiness figure well below what the effort suggests.


How should you read the two together?

The same data in the example above gives Complete = 50% and Readiness = 58.35%. Fifty Learners finished the Lesson outright, and another 25 did real work that Complete cannot see.

That is the general pattern worth carrying:

  • Complete only moves when an entire Lesson lands, so early in an Assignment it can sit near zero while Readiness climbs steadily. That is normal progress, not a stall.
  • A wide gap means a lot of unfinished work in progress. Learners are engaging across many Lessons without closing any of them out. Worth asking whether something is stopping them at the same point, which is a question for the Curriculum lens.
  • A narrow gap means Learners either finish a Lesson or do not start it. Progress is tidier, and the Learners who are behind are behind by whole Lessons rather than by fragments.
  • Neither figure tells you who. Both are roll-ups for whoever the dashboard is currently reporting on. The Learners lens is where you find the individuals behind the percentage.

 

Best practice: Judge an Assignment on the pair, not on either alone. Complete on its own understates real progress mid-Assignment, and Readiness on its own can look healthy while very little has been finished.


Where do these two figures appear?

Both sit on the view band, the strip above the three lenses, shown as % Readiness and % Complete. They stay visible whichever lens you are in, and they describe whoever the dashboard is currently reporting on.

That last point matters. Apply a Custom View or type in the Filter and both percentages recalculate for that group, so the same Assignment reports different figures depending on the view you have applied.

 

Note: A Reference Assignment has no view band, so neither figure is reported on one. That type measures what is being used rather than how far along anyone is, so there is no finish line for a percentage to describe.


FAQ

Which of the two should I report to my leadership? Both, with the gap explained. Complete alone understates progress mid-Assignment and Readiness alone can look healthy while little has been finished.

Why did Readiness go up when nobody completed a Lesson? Readiness moves whenever a Learner finishes any mode. Complete waits for the whole Lesson.

Can Complete be higher than Readiness? Yes, though it is less common. It happens when the Lessons Learners have finished are the ones with fewer modes, so they close out Lessons without accumulating many learning events.

Do Knowledge Checks really count for half? Yes. Learning events are one half of the calculation and Knowledge Checks are the other, regardless of how many learning modes a Lesson contains.

Does a failed Knowledge Check count toward Readiness? The calculation counts Knowledge Checks finished. Pass and fail rates are reported separately, on the Overview and Curriculum lenses and in the Learners lens columns.

Why do these percentages differ from my Learning Program's numbers? Skyllful IQ reports one Assignment at a time. The figures cover the Learners enrolled in this Assignment, not every Learner in the Learning Program.

Both figures dropped when I applied a Custom View. Is that a problem? No. They recalculate for the group the view covers, so a view over a segment that is further behind reports lower figures.
