Best Practices for High-Quality Screen Captures

How do you choose the right device and setup?

Record on a Learner's device when possible to ensure screen compatibility. If a Learner device is not available, project a mobile device to a desktop. Do not use a video conference call.
Select portrait or landscape orientation based on the view Learners will see.
Do not resize the screen, rotate the device, or drag window corners during recording.
Check your device video recording settings and set the highest resolution.

How do you eliminate on-screen distractions?

Keep your mouse pointer off-screen when you are not actively clicking.
Remove visual clutter, such as timestamps, battery icons, or signal strength. Remove it during recording, or crop it out later in Skyllful Studio.
Turn off notifications before you record.
Use a screen recorder that does not add a watermark or overlay to the video.

Pro tip: Click the button, move the mouse off-screen, then describe your action. Repeat this for every Learner-facing step.

How do you provide clear verbal context?

Start by stating the learning objective. Ask what the Learner should understand or do by the end of the workflow.
Narrate the process in a linear, step-by-step way.
Include the reason behind each step. Highlight pain points and process implications, and explain how to avoid common errors.
Keep your audio clean. Record in a quiet space with little background noise, or use headphones so your narration is easy to hear.

How do you design with microlearning in mind?

Skyllful Lessons work best at about 15 steps or fewer. Learners retain more when content is short, linear, and focused.

If your workflow has branching paths, record each path as a separate Lesson so Learners can see each path from start to finish.
If a workflow is too long to shorten, use one of these approaches:
- Record one comprehensive Video, then break it into smaller Walkthrough and Practice segments, followed by a final Knowledge Check.
- Create several shorter Lessons, then connect them with one comprehensive Knowledge Check.

Pro tip: If a workflow drills down through several screens, you can often skip repetitive middle screens to keep the Lesson focused.

What should you check before you upload to Skyllful?

The person who records the video must not be the only person who approves the final Lesson content. If the recorder is also the approver, another team member must review the content internally before it is published.

What if you cannot capture a high-quality recording?

Contact your Local Administrator first. If your Local Administrator cannot resolve the issue, submit a case through the Skyllful support portal.
